James was born on 29 May 1838 in Kirkcudbright, Scotland. [1]
He was the son of Alexander McConchie and Elizabeth Purdie.[1]
He married Mary Kendrick on 15 May 1880 in St Peter's, Everton, Lancashire, England.[2] At the time of his marriage he was working as a Police Inspector and living at 27 Aber Street.[3]
James and Mary had four children: Robert, Jane, James and Reuben.
In 1881, aged 42, James was married and working as an Inspector of Police in Liverpool.[4]
In 1891, aged 52, James was living with his wife and four children in Everton, Liverpool, Lancashire. He was an Inspector of Police.[5]
The Censuses of 1901 and 1911 record that James and his wife lived at or near Aubrey Street, Everton with their three boys. He was working as an insurance agent.[6][7]
