Biography

Robert was born on 3 October 1758 at Ponden, Stanbury, Yorkshire, the son of Robert Heaton and his wife Mary Shackleton.^[1]

He married Betty Murgatroyd on 9 January 1781 at Haworth.^[2]

Robert died on 18 November 1817 and was buried at Haworth on 22 November 1817, Robert Heaton of Ponden, aged 59.^[3]

Monumental inscription in Haworth churchyard: "Here lieth the Body of Elizabeth Wife of Robert Heaton of Ponden and only Daughter of John Murgatroyd late of Roydhouse who departed this Life on Tuesday the 23rd Day of July 1816 in the 61st Year of her Age. She was born in May 1756. ALSO here lieth the Body of the above said Robert Heaton of Ponden who departed this Life on Tuesday the 18th Day of Novr 1817 in the 60th Year of his Age."^[4]

Research Notes

On 18 November 1799 Robert wrote out a list of all his children and their ages.^[5] They were : Rebecca aged 17, John Murgatroyd aged 16, Mary aged 14, Robert aged 12, Sarah aged 11, Michael aged 9, Harriet aged 7, Elizabeth aged 4, and William one year.^[6]
