Biography

Notables Project
Billy McCoy III is Notable.

Son of Daniel McCoy & Margaret (Taylor) McCoy.

He married Sarah "Sally" Runyon on 6 Apr 1843.[1] Their children were Albert, Ansel (or Anderson), Compton, Lafayette, James, Walter, Larkin, Lucille, Levisa, Arminta, and Phene.

In 1850, they were living and farming in Pike County, Kentucky, and their household included four children -- James (6), Lavicey [sic] (4), and twins Walter and Albert (age 3).[2]

They came from Pike County Kentucky to Worth County Missouri, near St Joe. Where he built, owned, and ran a saw mill. Family history has it that he packed up his family and moved to Missouri to get away from the killing and hatred of the feud.

According to his grandson John Newton McCoy, none of his direct ancestors actively participated in the feud. Though Billy's younger brother Randolph, a.k.a. Ol`Ran`l McCoy, is credited with starting the "McCoy - Hatfield" feud. Though the move didn't stop "active" relatives from visiting Johnny Newton's home in Kansas looking for a place to lay low.[3]

About the death of William "Billy" McCoy, III:

Billy was out in the woods cutting down an old oak tree. When midday came upon him, he rested under the tree to wait for his son Albert to fetch his dinner. A freak storm blew up before Albert returned. When he finally got back to his father, he found his father, Billy, dead under that old oak tree. Billy had been struck down by lightning.[3]
