Grandfather

William Henry Bretches, born April 6, 1865, in Anna, Shelby County, Ohio, was a true pioneer of Montgomery County, Kansas. Jacob Bretches and Lydia Ann Shaffer, parents of Wm. H., moved from Sidney, Shelby County, Ohio to Decatur, Illinois, in late fall of 1865. then Jacob and Lydia then moved with the first seven of their children in a covered wagon to Independence, Montgomery County, Kansas, arriving in the summer of 1872. Jacob quit his previous trade as a Cooper (a person whose work was making and repairing barrels and casks) and settle on a farm in Montgomery County.

William Henry Bretches was married by Minister J. R. Evans in Radical City, Kansas., to Jeanie Elizabeth Heaton on January 6, 1895. William and Jeanie started their first home together on a farm in Sycamore Township, Montgomery County, Kansas. At the age of three, Jennie suffered a sickness or accident which left her with a slightly twisted foot. The handicap never prevented her from being a hard working companion. In fact, my grandmother delivered me, her granddaughter, Nellie Maxine McClain on September 21, 1918.

William Henry and Jennie were members of the Pentecostal Community Church. Tithing to the church, family welfare, and concern for his neighbors were grandfather's main priorities in life. In addition to crops, my grandfather raised hogs and cattle. Before and during the depression years, my grandfather would butcher a hog or a steer to share. After Sunday Church services, members of the congregation or neighbors come to their home for a big Sunday dinner. Everyone that came were welcome to get fruit vegetables and meat before they went home.

Together, William and Jennie raised seven children on the farm. In addition, William's mother, Lydia lived at various times in the home after her husband died as did my mother, Lilian Gladys (Bretches) McClain and myself after the early death of my father, Frank N. McClain.

The names of William and Jeanie children are Maude Mae Bretches Seybold, born November9,1895. Irvin Samuel Bretches, born August 15. 1897. Lillian Gladys Bretches McClain Agusto, born April 16., 1901, Mary Elizabeth Bretches Silcott, born about 1905, Lydie Ellen Bretches Crowder, born around 1908 and Jacob "Jake" Bretches around 1913.

I remember Grandpa hiding his money in syrup buckets, covering them with a cloth and burying in various places around the farm. When he retired and sold the farm, grandpa collected the hidden money and along with the money he received from various sales, decided to put his money in the bank. the bank was owned by Mr. George Gurnsey of Independence, Kansas. As feared. the bank failed and grandpa lost his money. William had brought a place in Independence after selling the farm and had a few hogs and cattle left, the lost of the money wasn't as devastating for the Bretches family as it was for others.
