Jacob was born on December 5,1909 in Elk City, Montgomery County, Kansas and a son of William Henry Bretches and Jennie Heaton. He passed away on August 23,1964 and buried in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence, Montgomery County, Kansas. [1]

J. L. BRETCHES DIES ON SUNDAY; RITES WEDNESDAY
Jacob Lafayette Bretches, 54, farmer in the Thayer community died unexpectedly at 7:30 Sunday morning at his home. Death was attributed to a heart attack.
Funeral services are to be conducted at 2:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the Rodrick Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Mr. Bretches was born on December 4, 1909 at Elk City. He was a son of William H. and Jeannie Bretches. He attended school in Chautaqua County. On April 9, 1935 in this city, he was united in marriage to Miss Bernadene Vandermark of Independence. The couple settled on a farm in Neosho County, near Thayer, where they have been regular residents.
Surviving with the widow are Mr. Bretches' mother, Mrs. Jennie Bretches of Columbus, and four daughters, Mrs. Velta (Charlene) White of Rockaway, New Jersey, Mrs. Robert (Marylin) Carter of rural Parsons, Mrs. Don (Sandra Sue) Robbins of Parsons and Miss Sharon Kay Bretches of the home.
Additional survivors are a brother, Irvin Bretches of this city, and three sisters, Mrs. Claude (Maude) Seybold of this city, Mrs. Mary Silcott of Columbus and Mrs. Ellen Crowder of Federal Way, Washingtopn and four grandchildren.
Preceding Mr. Bretches in death were his father, a sister and a brother.
He attended the Evangelical United Brethren Church and was a member of the A. T. A. and the N. F. O.
