Mathew was born circa 1838 in Birmingham, England.[1]
He married Anna UNKNOWN, likely prior to 1867. It is unknown whether they were married before or after emigrating to Ontario, Canada however their first child was born in Ontario circa 1867.
Mathew became a hotel keeper and lived in St. John's Ward, Toronto by 1871. The hotel he ran was owned By William F. Foster.
On July 24, 1874, he and Henry Woodward patented an incandescent light bulb, five years before Thomas Edison patented the device in the United States. The key difference between the Evans-_______ light and Edison's light was funding. Evans and Woodward tried but failed to get investors behind their project. It is claimed by an article in the "Electrical Engineer" that all subsequent light designs were based on their work.[1]
They lived in St. George Ward in 1881 and St. Lawrence Ward in 1891. They had at least two known children.
