Biography
Joelle was featured in a Meet Our Members Post on the G2G Forum!
I was born in 1957 in Los Angeles. My parents were Raymond Picken Colville and Joelle (Mamie Jo) Crawford [1]
Education
I attended California Lutheran College (now University) in Thousand Oaks, California from 1975-1977. During the Spring of 1978 I was a work/study student at Semester at Sea, an educational program where students receive college credit traveling on a ship around the world, attending classes on board. We visited South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, India, Greece, Egypt, Spain and Morocco.
I graduated with a Batchelor of Arts in Sociology from San Francisco State University in 1979.
After that, I graduated from Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in 1985 with a Master of Divinity. In 1998 I received a Dr. of Ministry from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago.
Career
Joelle is a pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America
In 1985 I was assigned to the Southern Wisconsin District of the American Lutheran Church where I was interim pastor at Middle and Lower Coon Valley Lutheran Lutheran from 1985-1986.

I was ordained a pastor in the American Lutheran Church (ALC) on July 6, 1986, at Grace Lutheran Church in San Francisco. [2]
From 1986-1989 I served at Hope Lutheran in Madison, Wisconsin, St. John and Trinity Lutheran in Birnamwood, Wisconsin from 1989-1998, St. John Lutheran in Cushing, Iowa from 1999-2005, Salem Lutheran in Roland, Iowa from 2005 to 2010 and Ridgeway Lutheran Parish in Ridgeway, Iowa from 2010-2013.
In 2013 I began working for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America as Director for Evangelical Mission in the Northeastern Iowa Synod. I moved to Waterloo, Iowa and bought a house there.
Family
On July 4, 1987 I married Loren Hanson in Madison, Wisconsin. We had Isaac and Sarah. [3]

Loren was killed in a car accident in Mason City, Iowa, on August 1, 1999. He is buried at Lower Coon Valley Lutheran in Stoddard, Wisconsin.
Travel
My experience with Semester at Sea instilled a love of travel. Besides many journeys across the United States, I have taken two trips to Israel (1984 and 2000). In 2004 I traveled independently with my two children around Italy for three weeks. [4]

In May 2017 I walked the last 100 kilometers of the Camino in Spain from Sarria to Santiago, earning my Compostela.
In Jan 2019 I took a cruise to the Caribbean.
Cats
I have lots of cats. I’ve always taken in stray and feral cats. I have a way with taming them. My first space page was for Freddy, who in 2020 died just a few months shy of his 20th birthday.
Interests
Joelle (Colville) Colville-Hanson has Scottish Ancestors.
Descendant of Robert the Bruce.
I have Scottish roots on both sides. My Ancestry.com DNA says I’m 81% Scottish. The Colvilles came from Argyll to Illinois and Ohio in the 19th century. The Crawfords came much earlier to the Southern Colonies (17th and 18th centuries). I have ancestors who were pioneers, dirt-poor farmers, aristocrats, and plantation owners who held enslaved people. I have ancestors who fought on both sides of the Civil War. I find the stories of all of them fascinating. I will often expand the tree way beyond my blood relatives because I find their stories so interesting.

I have a Colville Name Study. I am particularly interested in ancestors on my father's side who came from Kintyre, Scotland and founded a Scottish Settlement at Argyl.

Descendant of Williiam Colville of Lesnessock and Tradigal (1662-1712).
James Colville, my second great grandfather was born in Campbeltown, Scotland and came to Ohio with his wife, Isabell Breckenridge in 1837. His son, my great-grandfather, Robert and wife Agnes Mckay (who came to the US on the Gleaner in 1842) moved to Winnebago County, Illinois in 1857 and became part of the Scotch Settlement at Argyle.
Crawfords
Joelle (Colville) Colville-Hanson is a member of Clan Crawford.
Descendant of William Crawford Arrived in South Carolina from Scotland, 1772.
My fourth great-grandfather, William Crawford arrived from Roxburghshire, Scotland to South Carolina in 1722. (Shades of Outlander!) My uncle Roy, a Methodist minister, did a lot of research on the Crawfords in the 50s and 60s on the Crawford family. Probaby much of what we know is thanks to his work.

I’m the Project Manager for the Illinois History. My focus is on Winnebago County. I started with the Scottish Settlement in Argyle, but got interested in Rockford and surrounding areas. I’m really looking forward to working with others who are doing research on Illinois families. There’s a lot of great history in Illinois!

As I posted on your Member of the Week Interview thread today, I was shocked and pleased to discover that you and I are 5th cousins once removed. You are a 5th cousin to my mother. We are both descended from John Breckenridge and Janet Pickan from Argyll, Scotland. We both also show up on the DNA record for John and Janet as well.
My branch of the Breckenridge family emigrated to New Zealand, and I have also emigrated from NZ to Canada.
