Biography

Pieter Bogardus Bap., Apr. 2, 1645, New Amsterdam.

Peter Bogardus, mariner, resided in Albany near the close of his life, and then he removed to Kingston where he died in 1703. In 1673 he was one of the magistrates of the town, and in 1690 was commissioned with others to treat with the Five Nations and to look after the defense of the town. He made his will February 3, 1701. His wife was Wyntie Cornelis (Bosch) Borgardus, daughter of Cornelis Teunise and Maritie Thomas (Mingael) Bosch, who afterwards married Jurriaen Janse Groenwout in 1664. [1]

Birth

Pieter Bogardus, was born ca. 2 Apr 1645, and was bp. on 4 Apr 1645 New Amsterdam, NN. Baptism was recorded at the Reformed Dutch Church of New Amsterdam, NN[2] Pieter's mother was not recorded on the baptism record.
As with any birth, actual birth need not be at the location of the registration of the baptism, however with Pieter's father being a Reformed Church Dominee, it is logical that baptism would have occurred at the time and place of birth. It is possible however, that with the Albany Church in its infancy, Everardus choose to register the baptism at the central Church of New Amsterdam, which served as a central repository for greater New Amsterdam (Long Island, Staten Island and New Jersey communities immediately across the Hudson, and as far north as Westchester County. I would not discount either argument (Tom Quick). Albany church records were incomplete or lost before 1683. [3]

Research notes

LNAB

Bogardus is the surname recorded for Pieter's father at Pieter's baptism. Quackenbush-118 16:44, 8 October 2017 (EDT)

Children

Need more proof Source: Pieter Bogardus appears to place births at Albany, however six children predate the available Baptism records from the Albany Reformed Dutch Church, ca. 1683/4. Daughter Rachel, bp. on Feb 13, 1684 , was the first child to have a found recorded baptism.

The "Biography" section indicates that Peter was a mariner. Can someone please indicate the basis for this statement?

Van Laer, in Minutes of the Court of Albany, Rensselaerswyck and Schenectady 1668-1673, Vol I, indicates in a footnote on p. 117 that Pieter Bogardus was a glazier by trade (citing Munsell's Collections on the History of Albany, 1:26). The citation appears to contain an error, as the statement is on p. 46 rather than 26 of the Munsell volume, in a section reporting records of the Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of Albany. From The Deacons' Account Book, in a list from 1684 that shows amounts paid to merchants, artisans, and laborers who did work on the rebuilding of a house purchased by the church, is an entry for "Pieter Bogardus for the glazing, 96."

Bogardus-177 and Bogardus-9 appear to represent the same person because: This recently imported match needs to be merged into the NNS PPP. No tree conflicts. This has a full marriage, married February 10, 1665 in New Amsterdam, New York, United States. Thanks!
