a label azure Gilbert de Clare's shield would have appeared as above and with "a label azure" (a bar with three downward prongs in blue) in 1215 at Runnymede, because his father was still alive then. After Gilbert's father died (1217) he would remove the three-pronged azure label which indicated he was the heir, and carried the same shield that his father had carried at Runnymede (which would be the three red chevrons without the blue label - see Richard de Clare).
