Hi Connectors! The May Connectors Challenge starts May 1st

image

This is a monthly challenge that is open to everyone. The goal is to connect unconnected branches to the main tree by connecting to already existing profiles. WikiTree currently has 4,283,277 profiles that are disconnected from the Global Family Tree. The Connectors Project invites you to help us make a dent in this number by taking part in our monthly Connectors Challenge. Can you help us in our mission to connect all of the unconnected profiles on WikiTree into the Global Family Tree?

Summary of Rules:

1. Pick an existing profile (created before this month’s challenge began) that is not currently connected to the Global Family Tree.

2.  Add any first degree relative to that profile (a parent, spouse, child, or sibling). Continue adding relatives until you reach a profile that is already connected to the Global Family Tree. Please be aware that may take up to 24 hours for the tree to update and show your connections.  Only the connection to the main tree counts!

3.  If you would like to participate in this month's challenge, simply click the ANSWER this post button (not the comment link) and tell us you are participating (comments will be hidden). Then head over to The Connectors Challenge Page and familiarize yourself with the challenge rules.

Yes, I'll try for a connection or two this month.

I can never figure the tracker out, but I did connect an unconnected branch of Buchtel-160 to their ancestor Buchtel-128.

can you please check the tracker because the current leader is creating brand NEW profiles and claiming them as connections. But unfortunately that breaks this challenge's rule #1 of adding a profile that was created at least in the previous month. Thanks

Hello N,

There does appear to be a general misunderstanding of the ethos of the 'Connector challenge' - several of the participants appear to be getting it confused with a 'Connect-a-Thon', which let's be fair - is a reasonable mistake to make. Maybe the 'difference' between the two challenges needs to be restated.
Well i thought that the 'Connect-a-Thon' was more like the 'Connectors' challege.

The first one i took part in last July, i spent about an hour connecting the notable Glenda Jackson [[Jackson-51750|Glenda May Jackson CBE (1936-2023)]] to my extended family tree. When i then looked at the tracker, i had 3 points and the leader had over 50 points - so i knew then that i was doing something that was not quite right.

Maybe the reason for the misunderstanding is that in the help pages for the 'Connect-a-Thon' challenge there is the part about connecting unconnected profiles to the main tree. But that process takes much much longer than adding a new profile to an existing profile.

I did ask before the thon started how the scoring reflected the difficulty.
For the Connectathon, you would get a point for each profile you created to get to Glenda. So for instance, if you created Glenda's mother, then Glenda's aunt, then your uncle ... that would be 3 points.

If you created the same type of 3 profiles for the Connectors Monthly Challenge, that would only be one point because you only connected one person (Glenda) to the global wikitree (even though you had to create a chain of 3 new profiles to get there).
All - This does happen from time to time where a WTer confuses our monthly challenge with the CaT.   We are working to better explain and to point out the differences.

N - I have reached out to the current leader to explain how our Connector's Challenge is different than the CaT.  Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Allan - thanks for your comments about how you first understood the CaT and our Monthly Connectors Challenge.  N's explanation, afterwards, is spot on.

Notables Project - (Not sure who this is). My apologies for not seeing your name change suggestion previously. The leadership of the Project will discuss.

Thank you to everyone who participates and for bringing this to our attention.  Most appreciated.
It has been a couple days since my posting and  I am wondering if anything is being done about contacting the current leader of the Connectors Challenge to inform them about their errors ?

Because on 2024/05/09 twelve NEW profiles were created and once again mistakenly claimed as connections. This is very disheartening to us wikitree challenge participants who DO follow the rules :(

Do you want others to replicate false claims just to get higher numbers and be a false leader ??? This would seem to negate the purpose of having a connectors challenge at all.
N -

In a previous message, I said that I did reach out to the current leader so I am not sure why you asked if "anything is being done to contact" that person.   I am not planning on sharing my conversations because I think it would be unkind to do so.  I am working with the WikiTree'er to better understand the rules of the monthly Connectors Challenge.

My wish is that we not continue to call out a person on G2G who is working to better understand the rules. People learn at different speeds.  David and I know about this situation.  I promise you that the other participants scores are not affected.  I hope no one is disheartened to the point of feeling negated.  Please don't worry about his scores,  because as you mentioned, they will not count.

I really appreciate your passion for connecting as well as alerting us to this situation.  You are a great member of the Connector's Project and please know that we are helping another fellow WT become a stronger researcher.
Sorry about that ... I realize that I myself used the word "leader", so I don't know why I made the mistake of interpreting your use, as a wikitree leader who is involved in running this challenge. This has been a recurring problem, so it would be nice if it could be fixed. I apologize for my complaining and I appreciate your help.

N- Sending you an email tomorrow to chat about a possible solution. smiley
