Lucy Ann Woolner was born on August 28, 1924[1] in Dunwich, Suffolk, England. She was the daughter of Robert Woolner and Sarah Kemp. The family moved to Rustico, Prince Edward Island, in 1836, when Lucy was 12 years old. When she was 19, she married Alexander Marquis MacNeill. She moved to Alexander's home in Cavendish, Prince Edward Island, where she lived until her death, 68 years later.[2]
Alexander and Lucy had 6 children. Following the death of their daughter Clara in 1876, they raised their granddaughter, Lucy Maud Montgomery.[3] Following Alexander's death in 1898, Maud moved in with her grandmother.[4] She was living there when she wrote her famous Anne of Green Gables , and many of her other works.
Lucy died on March 10, 1911 in Cavendish. According to her obituary, "Mrs MacNeill - "Aunt Lucy" as she was affectionately called by the whole community, whether relatives or not - was beloved and respected by all who knew her, and her spirits, industry, bravery, and unfailing kindness will never be forgotten."[2] She was buried in Cavendish Community Cemetery in Cavendish, Queens County, Prince Edward Island, Canada.
