Biography

This profile is part of the Wilson Name Study.

Josiah was born about 1660. He is the son of James Wilson and Margaret Kidd.

Josiah may have been born in Dunbar, Haddingtonshire, Scotland.[1]

Major Josiah Wilson, son of James Wilson, of Calvert County, Maryland, whose ancestors are supposed to have come from Scotland, about 1660, and first settled in Virginia. Major Josiah Wilson, son of James, was long a man of public influence. He served as high sheriff of Prince George's and of Anne Arundel Counties, Maryland; was an alderman and incorporator under the first charter of Annapolis, granted by Queen Anne in 1708; and for several terms, and at the time of his death in November 1717, was a member of the Lower House of the Maryland General Assembly. He married Martha Lingan, daughter of George and Anne Hardesty Lingan, and their son, Josiah Wilson, Jr., wedded Elizabeth Sprigg, daughter of Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Sprigg and his wife, Margaret (Mariartee), all of Calvert and Prince George's Counties, Maryland.

There is some great information on this family in the booklet "Western Maryland Families" by Raymond B. Clark, Jr., 1987. Some of the lines are followed to the eighth generation with some living in Montgomery and Frederick Counties of Maryland. Noland 588.
