Biography

Susannah Wedgwood was baptised at Burslem in Staffordshire on 23 January 1765, daughter of Josiah Wedgwood and his wife, Sarah Wedgwood. [1] Susannah (“Sukey”) suffered chronic ill health and was “never quite well and never very ill”. As a child she suffered from vomiting and boils, and later had difficulties with her pregnancies, spending much time in bed and suffering from what most likely was hyperemesis. She also experienced motion sickness and preferred to ride in a phaeton rather than a carriage. [2]

She married physician Robert Waring Darwin at St Marylebone on 18 April 1796. [3] Despite her woes Susaannah became the mother of at least 6 children.

She died on 15 July 1817 and was buried at St Chad, Shrewsbury. [4][5]
