Biography

Scottish flag
Adam Watson has Scottish Ancestors.

Adam was born about 1764, probably in Mecklenburg County. In about 1785 he was a Chain Carrier (CC) for his father's property.[1]

By 1788 he and his brother David moved to Rutherford County, where on 25 June he married Catherine Hughs. The bondsman was John Hughes,[2] and the witness was R. Lewis, C.C.[3] They are found in the 1790 census with one young son (listed as under-16 years old but realistically about three) and an over 16 year old man who is presumably David.[4]

Another brother, William Watson was instructed by their father to pay $10 each to his brothers, including Adam, in a will dated 12 July 1798.[5]

Adam appears in the 1800 census of Morgan Township without his brother David and without the son from the last census. Alongside himself and Catherine there are now four under-ten year old sons (John D Watson, Thomas Watson, Adam Hyder Watson, and James Watson) and two under-ten year old daughters.[6]

Adam (45+), Catherine (26–44), one 16–25 son (John D Watson), three 10–15 sons (Thomas, Adam Hyder, and James), one 10–15 daughter, four under-10 year old sons (George William Watson...), two under-10 daughters.[7]

Research Notes

Parents

Adam has at least two Y-DNA tested descendants at Family Tree DNA (one at Y-37 and the other at Y-111). Three of their matches have tested to Big-Y700 which confirms the family to descend from the R-FTD38441 haplogroup.

Knowing this, and locating records for Thomas Watson, the following individuals are discounted as parents:

Sons

A dozen children are attributed to Adam across online family trees. Here provided are the ones whose relationships are questionable and could have been forged via Ancestry hint accepting:

  • William Watson / William Monroe Watson (1791 – 1822). Several sources attributed from across different time periods and North Carolina, but only a handful[12][13][14] even begin to make sense.
  • David Watson. No sources.

Y-chromosome DNA

  • Paternal relationship is supported through Y-chromosome DNA testing. D Watson, Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) kit #217019, and his 6th cousin once removed, B Watson, FTDNA kit #217040, match at a Genetic Distance of 5 on 67 markers thereby supporting their direct paternal lines back to their MRCA Thomas Watson. FTDNATiP indicates a probability that the two share a recent common ancestor in [...] CE.
