Biography

Marjory Watson was probably born in Scotland in about 1853, the daughter of Unknown Hill and Unknown Munro.

Marjory married William Allardice Hill on 9 July 1887 at St. James's Manse in Forfar.^[1] They had three known children:

1. Susanna Munro Hill
2. Agnes Jane Hill
3. George Allardice Hill

In the 1891 census Marjory, aged 38, lived in Forfar with her husband [Hill-20661|William]], aged 34, children from his first marriage William, aged 5, and Davidson, aged 4, and children from their marriage Sushanna, aged 3, Agnes Jane, less than one year old.^[2]

In the 1901 census Marjory, aged 48, lived in Forfar with her husband [Hill-20661|William]], aged 45, step-children William, aged 15, and Davidson, aged 14, and children from their marriage Susanna, aged 13, Agnes J, aged 10, and George, aged 8.^[3]

Marjory's death at age 53 was registered in 1906 in the Forfar district.^[4]

Research Notes

There do not appear to be any appropriate baptism records for Marjory on Scotlands People, even when searching country-wide with fuzzy or phonetic matching.

In the 1861 census Margory, aged 8, may have lived in Kinclaven, Perthshire, Scotland.^[5] This is the only Marjory/Margory of approximately the right age indexed on the Scotlands People census for 1861.

In the 1871 census Marjory, aged 18 may have lived in St Martins, Perthshire, Scotland.^[6] This is the only Marjory of approximately the right age indexed on the Scotlands People census for 1871.

In the 1881 census Marjory, aged 27, may have been living in Forfar.^[7] This is the closest match for a Marjory of approximately the right age indexed on the Scotlands People census for 1881.

In the 1891 there are two children indexed on the same page of the census, Andrew Hill, aged 15, and James Hill, aged 12.

In the 1901 census the child James Hill, now aged 22, is again indexed on the same page.

There are no marriages or births to indicate that Marjory might previously have been married. These two children look as if they were children from William's first marriage to Betsy Smith:

1. Andrew Adamson Hill, birth registered in 1875 in the Forfar district.^[8]
2. James could have been any one of these three:

James Barnet Smith, birth registered in 1878 in the Forfar district.^[9]

James McDougal Smith, birth registered in 1878 in the Forfar district.^[10]

James Smith, birth registered in 1879 in the Forfar district.^[11]

Looking at the original census pages or good quality transcriptions may resolve some of these points.
