Biography

John was born on 12 Dec 1825 in Pennsylvania to Robert & Frances (Quigley) Stewart. [1]

He married Sarah Watson on 27 Sep 1849 in Watsontown, PA.

In the summer of 1850, the couple was blessed with their first child, George W. John worked as a hotelkeeper. He owned no real estate. The Stewarts lived next door to John's parents. There was also a black woman, Mary Jones, living in the hotel.[2]

The Stewarts had another child, Alexander, in January 1852. Sarah died in December 1853, shortly before Alexander turned 2 years old. And, little George died in 1854 at the age of 3 1/2.

John married again about 1855 to Jane Mary Betz and this couple had at least seven children.

By 1860, John took up farming. He owned $4000 of real estate and $800 of personal property. The Stewart had two children before 1860, Frances and Laura.[3]

The Stewarts added three more children to the family in the 1860s, William, Sarah and Cordelia. As John's family grew, so did the value of his property. In 1870, John owned $7000 worth of real estate and $1000 worth of personal property.[4]

In 1880, John continued to farm. The Stewarts again had added more children to the family, Ella Maud in 1872 and Robert in 1874.[5]

John passed away on 21 Nov 1883 and is buried in Saint Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in Lamar, PA.[6]
