Cocke County History

Established by an act of The Tennessee Genealogy Assembly on 7 Oct 1797 and named after William Cocke, one of the state's first US Senators. It was created from part of Jefferson County, Tennessee. It is located between the Great Smokey Mountains and the Appalachians.

Cocke County Notables

Geography

The county has a total area of 443 square miles (1,150 km2), of which 435 square miles (1,130 km2) is land and 8.6 square miles (22 km2) (1.9%) is water, according to the US Census Bureau. Cocke County is part of East Tennessee, one of Tennesee's Three Grand Divisions. These divisions are not only geographic, but also cultural and defined in state law. Cocke County is also part of the South Central Region of Appalachia.

    • The oldest unfinished highway project in Tennessee.
  4. Great Smokey Mountains National Park
    • An American National Park that straddles the ridgeline of the Great Smoky Mountains, part of the Blue Ridge Mountains, which are a division of the larger Appalachian Mountain chain.
