Peter Snell was born June 24, 1730, in Stone Arabia Patent, Albany County, New York. (Note: In 1795, Schoharie County was created by joining portions of Otsego and Albany counties.) During the American Revolutionary War, Peter enlisted in the Second Regiment of Tryon County New York Militia. Peter served under Colonel J. Klock and Lieutenant Colonel Wagner. [1] [2]
Peter is honored for his service by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution as Ancestor #A106459. DAR records indicate that his wife's name was Susannah "Anna" Kilts, and that he died July 24, 1804, in Manheim, Herkimer county, New York. Application for membership in the Society have been made by the descendants of his of his daughters, Anna Snell, who married Conrad Zimmerman; Catherine Snell, who married Adam Timmerman; and of his sons, Peter P. Snell, who married Anna Timmerman; George Peter Snell, who married Margaret Snell; Joseph P. Snell, who married Mary Elizabeth Snell; Suffreines Snell, who married Eve Fry; Conrad Snell, who married Margaret Bellinger; and John P. Snell, who married Mary Zimmerman. [3]
Peter was the only survivor of six brothers in the Battle of Oriskany on 6 August 1777. Peter died at age 74 and is buried in the Snells Bush Upper Cemetery, in Manheim Center, New York. [4] Peter's Find A Grave indicates that his "DAR ID Number" is 63686, however this is the National Number that refers only to the application for the descendants of Anna Snell, who married Conrad William Zimmerman.
During the French and Indian War (1754–1763), part of a larger Seven Years' War, Peter Snell was in the Colonial service in Deycherts Company, which was ordered out by Sir William Johnson to Fort William Henry. He saw nine days of service, 20-29 Mar 1757.
Peter died in 1804.
