• Source: S500014 England & Wales, Birth Index, 1837-2005 Publication: MyHeritage Civil registration ? the government recording of births, marriages, and deaths ? began in England and Wales on 1 July 1837. Local registration districts had jurisdiction for recording civil events, but were required to send copies of their records each quarter to the General Register Office (GRO) in London. The GRO created indexes to these records which are organized by event, year, and quarter, and thereunder alphabetically by surname.Information included in the index changed over the years. From inception up to June 1911, the birth index lists: name of child, registration district, and reference information (volume and page numbers). Since September 1911 the index also includes the mother?s maiden surname.Information provided in the index can be used to order a copy of the person?s birth certificate for a fee from the GRO through their Certificate Ordering Service. Depending on the year, full birth certificates may provide: name of child, birth date, birthplace, sex, father?s name and occupation, mother?s maiden name, informant?s name, residence, and relationship to the child, and date of registration.Note: For years where images of the index are available, be sure to consult the image to verify the information presented to you. Sometimes errors happen during the transcription process. For example,a "5" may have inadvertently been transcribed as a "3". Since there is a fee for ordering certificate copies from the GRO, it is especially important to make sure all reference numbers are correct before placing an order.Search tip: Compliance with registration laws have always been very good. It is estimated that initially about 90-95% of births were reported, but that by 1875 registration was 99%. Since nearly all births were reported, if you are having trouble finding someone in the index, try searching using various given names or initials. In later years, searching on the combination of child?s surname and mother?s maiden name (if known), may also help locate difficult-to-find individuals. If an individual can still not be found, especially in earlier years, try searching local parish records for the child?s baptismal record. • Source: S500015 1911 England & Wales Census Publication: MyHeritage What is in the 1911 census? In common with the censuses that preceded it, it recorded the following information:- Where an individual lived- Their age at the time of the census- Who (what relatives) they were living with- Their place of birth- Occupation- Details of any guests on the night of the census- Details of any servants they hadAlso, depending on an individual's circumstances, additional information could include:- Whether they were an employee or employer- Precise details of the industry or service they worked in- Details of nationality- Duration of their current marriage- Number of children born to that marriage- Number of children still living, and the number who had died- Details of any illnesses or conditions each family member had, and the date these beganFertility in marriage and occupational dataIn response to government concerns the 1911 census also asked additional, more specific questions to each household, about fertility in marriage and occupational data. The 1911 census and the suffragettesFrustrated with the government's refusal to grant women the vote, a large number of women boycotted the 1911 census by refusing to be counted. There were two forms of protest. In the first, the women (or their husbands) refused to fill in the form, often recording their protest on the household schedule. In the second, women evaded the census by staying away from their home for the whole night, and so did not lodge their protest on the household schedule. In both cases, any details relating to individual women in the households will be missing from the census. For the family historian, a refusal to fill in the form (accompanied by a protest statement) at least registers the presence of a woman, or women, in the household. But the women who evaded the count by leaving their home for the night are entirely untraceable via the census. The exact number of women who boycotted the census is not known, though some people have estimated that it may be as many as several thousand.DC Thomson Family History service provided to MyHeritage members by agreement with The National Archives, London. • Source: S500040 1940 United States Federal Census Publication: MyHeritage We undertook the arduous task of deciphering the handwritten pages of the 1940 Census to create a searchable index for the census. This was accomplished gradually, state by state, as we covered more and more of the census. As required by the US Constitution, the census is a federal mandate to count every resident of the United States of America every 10 years. Census data is released to the public 72 years after it was taken.Federal census takers were asked to record information about every person who was in each household on the census day. A census taker might have visited a house on a later date, but the information hecollected was supposed to be about the people who were in the house on the census day. The basic census enumeration unit was the county. Each county was divided into enumeration districts, one for each enumerator. The completed forms were sent to the Commerce Department's Census Office in Washington, D.C.Federal censuses are usually reliable, depending on the knowledge of the informant and the care of the census enumerator. Information may have been given to a census taker by any member of the family or by a neighbor. Some information may have been incorrect or deliberately falsified. Depending on the year, information recorded about a passenger may include name, age, gender, occupation, destination, and information regarding place of origin?e.g. native country, citizenship status, race, nationality, birthplace, or last residence. By 1907 passenger manifests contained 29 columns and were two-pages wide with left and right sides. Many of the passenger manifests span two pages, and a common omission for genealogists has been to locate the first page and miss the existence of the second. MyHeritage has solved this problem for the first time by stitching the double pages into single document images, ensuring that important information will not be missed. Two questions that were included on the manifest beginning in 1907 were: 1) name and address of nearest friend or relative in country whence the alien came; and 2) whether going to join a relative or friend, and if so, what relative or friend, and his name complete address. MyHeritage has indexed the names and relationships of the individuals referenced in these two additional questions, making MyHeritage the only place where these additional names are searchable.Update June 2018: Added records primarily from crew lists, lists of detained alien passengers, U.S. citizen lists, and lists of aliens held for special inquiry.Records in this collection come from National Archives (NARA) microfilm collections M237 (Passenger Lists of Vessels Arriving at New York, New York, 1820-1897) and T715 (Passenger and Crew Lists of Vessels Arriving at New York, New York, 1897-1957). • Source: S646716756 England & Wales, Birth Index, 1837-2005 Publication: MyHeritage Note: Civil registration — the government recording of births, marriages, and deaths — began in England and Wales on 1 July 1837. Since September 1911 the index also includes the mother’s maiden surname.Information provided in the index can be used to order a copy of the person’s birth certificate for a fee from the GRO through their Certificate Ordering Service. Depending on the year, full birth certificates may provide: name of child, birth date, birthplace, sex, father’s name and occupation, mother’s maiden name, informant’s name, residence, and relationship to the child, and date of registration.Note: For years where images of the index are available, be sure to consult the image to verify the information presented to you. Sometimes errors happen during the transcription process. For example, a "5" may have inadvertently been transcribed as a "3". In later years, searching on the combination of child’s surname and mother’s maiden name (if known), may also help locate difficult-to-find individuals. If an individual can still not be found, especially in earlier years, try searching local parish records for the child’s baptismal record.Archibald Lewis W Ovens
Birth date: Jan-Feb-Mar 1898
Birth place: Highworth, Wiltshire, England
Volume: 5a
Page: 24
 • Source: S646716757 1911 England & Wales Census Publication: MyHeritage Note: What is in the 1911 census? The exact number of women who boycotted the census is not known, though some people have estimated that it may be as many as several thousand.DC Thomson Family History service provided to MyHeritage members by agreement with The National Archives, London.Archibald Lewis William Ovens
Gender: Male
Birth: Circa 1898 - Swindon, Wiltshire
Residence: Apr 2 1911 - 95. • Source: S646716782 1940 United States Federal Census Publication: MyHeritage Note: We undertook the arduous task of deciphering the handwritten pages of the 1940 Census to create a searchable index for the census. A census taker might have visited a house on a later date, but the information he collected was supposed to be about the people who were in the house on the census day. Some information may have been incorrect or deliberately falsified.William A Ovens
Gender: Male
Birth: Circa 1898 - England
Residence: 1940 - Barren Road (Between Forge Road & van Lest Ave), Middletown, Delaware, Pennsylvania, USA
Age: 42
Residence in 1935: Same House - Barren Road (Between Forge Road & van Lest Ave), Middletown, Delaware, Pennsylvania, USA
Race: White
Respondent: X
Citizenship status: PA
Marital status: Married
Wife: Irene M Ovens
Daughter: Mary Ovens
Census: Township:MiddletownEnum.
