Death and inquest notice, The Argus, 25 July 1882: "A farmer named George Thomas Ovens resident at Piper's Creek near Kyneton met with a sudden death on Saturday night whilst proceeding home. When within half a mile of his own residence he and his brother in law named Will got into a dray belonging to a neighbour named Luubricks and on arriving at Ovens gate he was found to be dead. A magisterial inquiry was held this evening before Mr M K Armstrong J P. The medical testimony indicated that Ovens had died from the rupture of his spleen which was much enlarged. The rupture had most probably been caused while deceased was scrambling into the dray. The magistrate found in accordance with this evidence Ovens was 58 years of age, and had been in the colony 33 years. He was a widower and leaves behind him 11 children."[3]
Victoria Births Deaths and Marriages death registration #9123 gives Kyneton as the place of death in 1882, aged 58; spouse's name Elizabeth Wall; mother's name Ellen Ovens (nee Thomas), father unknown.[4]
