Biography

Hugh John Montgomery was born 28 August 1841, on Prince Edward Island. He was the son of Senator Donald Montgomery of Prince Edward Island[1] and his wife Ann Murray.[2]

Hugh married twice.[1] His first wife Clara Macneill died 14 Sep 1876, at the age of 23, less than 2 years after Hugh and Clara's only child Lucy Maud Montgomery was born.[3] She was the daughter of Alexander (d. March 5, 1898) and Lucy (Woolner) Macneill (postmistress at Cavendish 1898-1901 died March 10,, 1911). After his wife's death Hugh left Lucy to the care of her Macneill grandparents.[4]

For many years Mr. Montgomery had a mercantile business in a large store in Clifton Corner, Prince Edward Island[5]

Montgomery first went west in 1881.[4] The following year he began working for a Saskatchewan co., where some of the time he was their agent in Prince Edward Island[4] Montgomery settled permanently in Prince Albert Saskatchewan, in 1884.[4]

Hugh's second marriage occurred in Eldon, Ontario on April 5, 1887.[6] He married Mary Ann McRae, age 24. They lived for a while in Battleford, Saskatchewan[4] Their children were Kate (1888), David Bruce (1891), Hugh Carlyle (Carl) 1893, Ila May.[4]

Hugh's daughter, Anne, joined him at Prince Albert, in 1890, but stayed only a year. She was expected to care for her younger half siblings, but it was during this time that her first poem was published.[4]

Mr. Montgomery was a staunch liberal, and he ran, in 1891, for the office of representative from Saskatchewan in the Dominion house.[1]

At the time of his death, Jan 16, 1900, he was Warden of the Prince Albert Jail. He died at West Prince Albert of congestion of the lungs. "One of the oldest and most highly respected residents of the west," he was buried with Masonic honors.[1][4]
