Biography

Thomas was born about 1560. His date of birth as well as his parents are unknown due to the lack of records. The rough estimate of his birth year is based on the assumption that Thomas was about 25 years old at the birth of his first child in 1585.

As can be seen from the baptismal records of the children listed below, Thomas was married to Gertraudt (Unknown). The date and place of marriage as well as Gertraudt's parents are unknown due to the lack of a marriage record.
The couple lived in Stuttgart, Duchy of Württemberg. Their children were:

  1. Anna, b. 25 September 1585.[1]
  2. Hanß Jacob, b. 13 October 1586[2], probably died before 9 November 1589 (see child no. 4 also named Hanß / Johann Jacob).
  3. Paulus, b. 26 November 1587[3], married (i) Anna Magdalena Kartolff 16 May 1609 in Stuttgart[4] (ii) Barbara Weiß from Dornstetten June 1622[5][6], buried 16 June 1629 in Stuttgart.[7]
  4. Johann Jacob, b. 9 November 1589[8], married (i) Agnes Haug from Stuttgart 19 November 1610 in Stuttgart[9] (ii) Katharina Stahl from Stuttgart 10 September 1622 in Dornstetten[10] (iii) Christina Hettler from Stuttgart 10 February 1624 in Dornstetten.[11]
  5. Anna Margretha, b. 4 October 1593[12], probably died before 1 June 1596 (see child no. 7 also named Anna Margretha).
  6. Ulrich, b. 9 March 1595[13]
  7. Anna Margretha, b. 1 June 1596.[14]
  8. Regina, b. 12 September 1599.[15]

Thomas' date of death is unknown due to the lack of a burial record. In the marriage record of the son Paul, dated 16 May 1609, it is not yet mentioned that the father of the groom is deceased. In the marriage record of the son Johann Jacob, dated 19 November 1610, it is mentioned that Johann Jacob is the son left by Thomas Mertz. Thomas thus probably died between 16 May 1609 and 19 November 1610.
