Biography

Samuel was born in 1837. He passed away in 1921.

Samuel McConchie was born at Kirkubricht in Galloway, Shire, Scotland, September 30, 1887, and died April 30th, 1921 at his home south of Frankfort, Kansas, aged 83 years and 7 months. He came to America in 1849 with his parents, who located first in Southern Illinois, but later moved to Knox county, Illinois, where he grew to manhood. He was married March 10, 1859, to Jane C. Baird, who preceded him in death January 3, 1909. He enlisted in Company I, 102nd Illinois Vol. Infantry, in August, 1862, and was discharged in March, 1863, at Gallatin, Tennessee, for disability supposed to be tuberculosis. He came to Kansas in 1869, and located on the farm in March, 1870, which was his home at the time of his death. He was the father of seven children; the first born, John Horace, died in infancy; surviving are : James H. of Salina, Kans., Margaret (Mrs. W.E. Howland) of Frankfort, Kansas; Thomas H. of Frankfort, Kansas; Mame (Mrs. C.A. McCartney) of Traer, Kans.; Ida May of Frankfort, Kansas and Jennie (Mrs. M. J. Welsh) of Frankfort, Kansas. Also one brother and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Black of Frankfort, KS., Mrs. Agnes Dingman of Long Beach, CA., and D. J. Mcconchie of Reedley, CA., also fourteen grandchildren and ten great grand-children and many other relatives. He is the last old soldier in the locality south of Barrett, as well as the last of a genertion who first settled in the communitye where he lived for over a half a century. He was a faithful and honored member of Henderson Post G.A.R. and was its Commander at the time of his death. Funeral services were held at the family home in Clear Fork township this afternoon, conducted by Rev. S. H. Jones, pastor of the Presbyterian church of this city. The body was laid to rest beside those of his wife in the Barrett cemetery. The funeral was one of the largest ever held in this county. The say was pleasant and all old friends and neighbors were able to attend. The old commrades of the deceased and the W.R.C. attended in a body.
