TILTON, GRACE MARIE MCCONAUGHY NN 150626 725 N. 7th St.
My parents were Amelia Ann Gardhouse McConaughy (b. March 10, 1852, Toronto, Can. - d. 1945, Rochelle) and James O. McConaughy (b. April 7, 11846, Lindenwood, Ill. - d. 1914, Rochelle).
My maternal grandparents were Priscilla Elizabeth Humberstone Gardhouse (d. 1902, Rochelle) and Edward Gardhouse (d. 1902, Rochelle). My paternal grandparents were Mary Neil Porter McConaughy (b. March 26, 1817 - d. 1903, Rochelle) and Dr. John M. McConaughy (b. 1815 - d. 1869, Rochelle) (G.A.R.)
I was born August 17, 1884, in Rochelle. I attended Rochelle schools graduating in 1902. My graduating class had a total of 14 and the first class with a four year high school - - previously it was only a 3 year school. I was employed by my father for many years doing general office work and writing insurance policies as an Asst. Insurance Agent. I opened a gift shop on Lincoln Hwy., presently the location of Hayes drug Store, and was the proprietor until my marriage to Clarence M. Tilton on August 28, 1912. The wedding took place in the McConaughy family home known as Greenhurst. Clarence, whose nickname was "Zeke" owned and operated a clothing store and a service station before working for the US Post Office as a special delivery carrier. We spent all of our married lives in Rochelle, where we raised 3 children, all of whom graduated from universities.
Our children are: 1. Edward Franklin Tilton (b. May 30, 1915) served in WWII Air force Training School until ear trouble developed. He married Persida (Degan) Tilton on June 22, 1940, and divorced in 1970. Their two children are: (a) Mary Ann (Tilton) McMahan (September 21, 1942) who married Ray McMahan in Phoenix, Ariz. They divorced in 1974. Their child: Justin Graham McMahan (August 20,1969); and (b) Edward Franklin Tilton, Jr. (December 4, 1946, Tucson, Ariz.) who married Marian (Escalante) Tilton on April 6, 1974. 2. Ann Jeannette (Tilton) Shelley (August 3, 1919, Rochelle) married Dr. Harry P. Shelley on February 7, 1942. He is a professor at the Univ. of Neb. Their children: (a) Peter Alan (April 5, 1947, Madison, Wis,) a lawyer, married Mary (Smiley) Tilton on August 29, 1970, near Denver, Colo.; (b) Michael Dennis Tilton (June 5, 1949, Morton Grove, Ill.) ; (c) Timothy Mark, M.D. (June 19, 1951, Morton Grove). 3. Elizabeth Louise (Tilton) Callahan (August 16, 1923, Rochelle) married Dr. Robert J. Callahan on January 18, 1946. He is a psychologist with the US Govt. Their children: (a) Catherine Ann Dudley (March 25, 1950, Madison, Wis.) married John Dudley July 10, 1972. He is a water resources consultant, Santa Fe, NM; (b) Ann Maureen (b. July 12, 1951, Milwaukee, Wis.) is a bio-chemist at the Univ. of VA.
On August 17, 1974, I was honored by my family and friends on the occasion of my 90th birthday. An open house was held at the First United Presbyterian Church in Rochelle. All of my family, except one grandson , plus many nieces and nephews from all over the United States came.
I have been active in the United Presbyterian Church, Charter member of the Serv. Club, Ladies of the Grand Army, friendly Soc., and Hosp. Aux.
I was admitted to the NSDAR on March 2, 1920, and have served as treasurer. My ancestor was Dr. John M. McConaughy who was a minister in his early years. After he had the misfortune of losing his voice he turned to medicine. He was one of 4 brothers who became doctors settling in various places in PA. They had one sister who married John McCurdy who was also a Revolutionary soldier. Later Dr. John moved and settled in the Lindenwood, Ill., area, where he practiced medicine. He and his wife were instrumental in starting the First Presbyterian Church in Rochelle. The railroad granted their permission to use the passenger cars that were left in Rochelle over the weekend, as a place to hold services, this was in 1854. Other ancestors were James McCurdy and James McConaughy both grandfathers to Dr. John McCurdy McCoanughy who was a paternal grandfather to both me and Ada J. McConaughy May (my sister).
