Biography

Ellen was born in 1811, in Norwich, the eighth and youngest child of Thomas Martineau and Elizabeth Rankin. She was christened at the Octagon-Presbyterian Chapel on 13th September 1815.^[1]

In 1841 she married Dr Alfred Higginson, a surgeon in Liverpool and brother to her sister-in-law.^[2] They had five children, three of whom died young.

She died in 1889 aged 78 and her remains are interred at The Ancient Chapel of Toxteth, Liverpool. She has a memorial at West Norwood Cemetery in Lambeth.^[3]
