Martha Lacy Ann "Mattie" Martin was born on 08 September 1869 in Alabama, United States. She was the daughter of John Floyd Martin (1830-1921) and Aquilla Maliccy (Matthews) Martin (1834-1917).[1]
Martha was believed to be the child designated as M. E. Martin, age 1 year, in the household of J. F. Martin on the 1870 United States Census for Dale County, Alabama in the area of the Barnes Crossroads Post Office.[2]
Martha was 10 years old when the 1880 United States Census was taken. She was enumerated in the household of her parents. The family was living in Geneva, Geneva County, Alabama.[3]
Martha married Thomas Warren Capps in about 1887, based on information in the 1900 United States Census. They were the parents of at least five children.
By the time the 1900 United States Census was taken, Mattie and Thomas W. Capps had been married for 13 years. Mattie had given birth to five children, all of whom were living. Mattie and her family were living in Geneva, Geneva County, Alabama.[4]
Martha Capps was designated as head of household on the 1910 United States Census. Martha's marital status was listed as widowed, however Thomas Capps did not pass away until 1942. Four of Martha's children were enumerated living in her home located in St. Paul, Geneva County, Alabama. Martha's occupation was recorded as farmer. Three of Martha's sons were working as farm laborers. A young man named Sam Fulford was also living in Martha's household and working as a farm laborer.[5]
Martha was still living in St. Paul when the 1920 United States Census was taken. She was again described as widowed. The only other member of Martha's household was her son John P. Capps. Both Martha and John's occupations were listed as farmer.[6]
Mattie was living with her son, Arthur G. Capps in St. Paul when the 1930 United States Census was taken. Her marital status was recorded as divorced.[7]
A 1940 United States Census record has not yet been located.
Martha Lacy Ann (Martin) Capps died on 21 June 1949 in Geneva County, Alabama at the home of her son on the Hartford route. She was 79 years old.[1][8] She was buried in Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery, Geneva County, Alabama.[9]
