Biography

Jonathan Martin was born about 1730, eldest son of Thomas Martin [and Mary Knight]**. He married Martha Squibb February, 24,1752. She was the daughter of Robert Squibb and Mary Coebourne; they had at least two daughters: Mary Martin Sharples and Lydia Martin Clayton. In his father’s will proven August 8, 1763, he was bequeathed 220 acres paying legacies. Jonathan died April 10,1801and was buried at Middletown Preparative Burying Ground, Lima, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. October 17, 1799, Jonathan conveyed for life a farm to daughter Mary and her husband William Sharples. They, having no children, were to pass on the bequest to the children of her sister, Lydia (Martin) Clayton.

    • NOTE: On numerous WT sites Thomas Martin 1681-1763 is said to have married Mary Knight in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1706. Mary is reported on WT sites as being born March 31,1695. These stats indicate that Thomas was 15 and Mary 11 years old when they married. Children assigned to them have birth dates: John about 1709; Alice 1709; Mary 1711; and a guesstimate for Abraham 1729. Jonathan only shows up on his father’s profile with no birth date. This would mean she bore children at age 14, 16 and 34. In addition, sites for Mary Knight’s siblings, children of Giles and Mary (English) Knight, show another daughter, Martha, as born in 1695.

The birth date 1730 for Jonathan seemed a plausible estimate given his marriage and death dates.
