Biography

Arthur was born in 1856. He was the son of Nathaniel Marston and Lois Barton. He passed away in 1933.

Arthur Barton Marston, son of Nathaniel and Lois Barton Marston, was born March 29, 1856 near Olena, Illinois. He passed to his eternal reward from his home in Jackson township, June 10, 1933, at the age of 77 years, two months and twelve days.

He was the youngest of a family of ten children, of whom but one sister survive, Mrs. Laura Barnes of Marston, Missouri. He spent his youth on his father's farm. On February 9, 1888, he married Miss Caroline Evans and they came to Madison county and settled on the farm in Jackson township which has been their home for forty-five years. Six daughters were born and grew to womanhood in this home. They are Mrs. Lois Steigle, Sigourney; Mrs. Ethel Bond, Cambridge; Mrs. Alta Sawhill, Flint, Michigan; Mrs. Florence Fife, Mrs. Laura Finney and Mrs. Merle Murrell who reside near the old and loved home.

Mr. Marston was raised in a Methodist home and of his father it is said, "his faith was of the kind of which martyrs are made." He was converted and united with the United Presbyterian church of Pitzer of which her remained a faithful member serving the latter years of his life as an elder. For a number of years he served the congregation as treasurer. His presence and service will be very distinctly missed.

The Marston family is of English descent. The family history in America dated back to 1634. The distingished and nurtured family traits are honor, kindness, benevolence and devotion to holy religion and a loving home. Mr. Marston worthily lived up to the family traditions. Among his neighbors and in his family his memory will be honored and revered.

The ripeness of his Christian faith was manifest through all the months of his last illness. Under the great suffering he was sweetly patient and uncomplaining. In the midst of his own trials he thought always of others. His was an example of that "patience in tribulation" becoming the true saint.

His wife, six daughters, nineteen grandchildren, and four great grandchildren outlive him. Only one, an infant grandchild has preceded him to the heavenly home. To these living ones all the many friends of the neighborhood and church extend their sympathy and comfort in this bereavement.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. W. C. Porter at the Pitzer church at two o'clock Monday afternoon, and burial was made in the Dexter cemetery.
