George Shannon "Doc" Long (1883-1958), a member of the Louisiana Long political dynasty, was an elected Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives from Louisiana for three terms, from 1953 until his death in 1958.

Born in 1883, he was the fifth of ten children of Huey Pierce Long and Caledonia Palestine Tison, and an older brother of Louisiana Governors Huey P. Long, Jr. and Earl K. Long. After finishing his studies at then-called Mount Lebanon College in 1899, he became a schoolteacher before returning to school to become a dentist, and then again to become a lawyer.[1]

  • 1920 to 1922 - Served as Oklahoma State House of Representatives
  • 1935 - Relocated to Louisiana
  • 1948 - Delegate to the Democratic National Convention
  • 1953 - Elected to the Eighty third, Eighty fourth, and Eighty fifth Congress, and served until his death in 1958[2]

He married twice.[3][2][4] First he married Mary Katherine "Kate" Shindel (1883-1950) about 1906[5] until her death in 1950.[6]

He married Jewell Tyson, his secretary, in 1953, and was married to her until his death in 1958.[7]

George Long died at age 78 on March 21, 1958, and is buried at Greenwood Memorial Park in Pineville, Louisiana.[8]

This is still very much a work in progress. Three biography sources say Long was married twice, and do not mention the woman connected as his wife, or any child. Only Find a Grave and Family Search --based only on the Find a Grave record-- say there were three wives, including the one connected here. But nothing on her memorial page (aside from the connection) indicates that she ever married Long or had a daughter named Mary Long. Was it a youthful dalliance? Quite possibly. If so, they should be linked in a few sentences in the biography-- not as married. But I would like to see more documentation even for that. What is there so far is unconvincing. If anyone has more, please add it. Otherwise I'm not comfortable with keeping the connections to Emma or Mary. Thoughts?

I'm adding sources from Ancestry and FamilySearch. That should help you in rewriting this biography. I agree, no sources found for the connected wife and child. I'm still looking...
