Biography

Private Hugh Johnson served in the United States Army in World War I
Service started: 9 Aug 1918
Unit(s): Co. "B," 12th Infantry, 8th Division
Service ended: 6 Jun 1919

Hugh Frank Johnson was born on 8 December 1887 in Boise, Ada, Idaho Territory, son of James Marion Johnson and Ella E Gilliland.[1]

His mother died when he was a toddler, and his father moved to Arkansas, where he remarried.

In 1900, Hugh was living in the Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory, with his father and stepmother. Though he and his brothers' occupation was "at school," the census indicated that they had not done so for the past year. They were a family of eight, with two younger half-sisters and one half-brother.[2]

Hugh enlisted in Company "B," 12th Infantry, 8th Division in the U.S. Army on 8 August 1918. He served until 6 June 1919, when he received an honorable discharge. After his service, he returned to Glenns Ferry, Elmore, Idaho.[3][4][5]

Hugh and Ida Anna Marie Krahn were married on 24 November 1921 in Boise.[6] Ida was born on 18 August 1894 in Stettin, Marathon, Wisconsin, United States. She was the daughter of Otto Krahn and Mary Boldt. One of their children is still living.

They settled in Glenns Ferry. He was employed by the Union Pacific Railroad for 32 years, working as a locomotive fireman. He retired in 1948 as an engineer.[7]

In 1930, their household consisted of six members. Along with his wife and children, two of his wife's sisters were living with them: Selma Krahn (19 years old) and Martha Krahn (18 years old).[8]

Hugh was an honorary life member of BLF&E and also was a member of the Veterans of World War I and Pomona Grange, both in Glenns Ferry.[7]

Hugh died on 20 May 1964 in Glenns Ferry, Elmore, United States, aged 76. He was buried in Glenn Rest Cemetery, Glenns Ferry, Elmore County, Idaho.[9]
