Having prior service with the Pennsylvania Volunteers, William enlisted in Company B of the 105th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on December 22, 1863 at age 37 as a later recruit. He was later transferred on June 1, 1865 to Company D of the 38th Ohio Volunteer Infantry until mustered out on July 12, 1865.
