Biography

Kate (Johnson) Waring is a part of US Black heritage.

Kate was born in 1862 in Maryland. Her father was a barber in Baltimore, where she was raised along with several siblings. She married Everett Waring in 1887, who had recently graduated from Howard Law School and was the first Black person to be admitted to the Maryland State Bar, and later became first Black person to argue a case before the U.S. Supreme Court. They lived in Baltimore, then went back to her husband's hometown of Columbus, Ohio, before finally settling in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she passed away a widow in 1925. She and Everett had 4 children. She was buried in Eden Cemetery near Philadelphia.
