Marriage 1875 Hull

John Hugh Doran married Clara Jackson in Hull Holy Trinity, late in 1875 when they were both about 22. ^{[1] [2]}

Nurse 1881 West Oldham

In 1881, five years after her marriage, Clara Doran is a surgical nurse at West Oldham Infirmary. This is remarkable in several ways: Women rarely reached senior positions in nursing and married women were often required to resign. Although married she was living in the hospital. ^[3]

Matron 1911 Seacroft, Leeds

In 1911 Clara Doran was the Matron of Leeds Hospital for Infectious Diseases, in the days when the doctors were only technically above the Matron. No doubt the junior doctors quailed before her displeasure and ignored her advice at great risk. ^[4]

Start of WW2

In September 1939 Clara is well into retirement at the age of 86. She is living in Felixstowe, Suffolk, with a doctor George J Conford and his wife Harriet, who may be Clara's sister. ^[5]

Death 1947 East Suffolk

Clara died at the age of 94 in the Deben District of East Suffolk in 1947. ^[6]

Research

Death of John Hugh Doran Although Clara is as often described as married as widow, we never find her with her husband, and the most likely death is very early in their marriage ^[7]
