Research Notes

Please see the UK association football managers site [6] for details of his predecessors and successors.

Fixing football leagues and football matches (although illegal) was quite common practice for some 'Football' clubs in this period, particularly when freemasons were involved. Frank's immediate predecessor was Clement Keys, a freemason. Liverpool FC and Manchester City FC were also freemason clubs [7]. They were found guilty of match fixing and some players and officials received fines. Contemporary Birmingham sport was very influenced by criminals fixing football matches. Notorious local gangs involved included the Peaky Blinders, Kimbers Birmingham Boys, Sabinis, etc.
