William Shephen Hamilton was the son of of Alexander Hamilton and Eliza Hamilton.
He attended West Point but resigned in 1817 before graduating. He went west sometime around 1818-1020 to St Louis and and worked as a surveyor and a lawyer in the surrounding territory and into Illinois. He settled in Illinois for several years in Galena and served in the state legislature in Springfield. He participated in various Indian conflicts in the 1830s. He moved to Wisconsin territory and became successful in lead ore mining and smelting ,founding the town of Wiot. He attempted to get appointed governor of the Wisconsin territory, but was unsuccessful. He went to California seeking new opportunities in 1848 after the lead ore business became less profitable and died of cholera in 1850 in Sacramento.[1]
