  5. MT. MULLIGAN DISASTER.
DEATH OF MR EVANS. NOT ONE SURVIVOR LEFT.
Advice from the Mareeba Hospital on Monday afternoon stated that Mr. Evans, mine manager of the Mt. Mulligan coal mine, had died at 9 o'clock that morning. Thus the only one of the whole of the men who were in the mine at the time of the explosion; whose life there seemed a possibility of saving, has passed, with his comrades, to the place where mining tragedies are not. He was just a little way inside the tunnel when the explosion occurred, and, though alive when rescued, was fearfully in jured and had a piece of wood pro-jecting from the base of his throat, was a brave fellow with a heart of oak, said the doctors, and it was with a good deal of confidence that they spoke of pulling him through. Every-thing possible had been done for him, but, medical science, though it can perform wonders, cannot perform the impossible, and at 9 o'clock on Mon-day morning the brave soul of Mana-ger Evans drifted Heavenwards. May his soul and the souls of his brave fellow workmen find eternal peace. Our Mareeba correspondent writes: Thos. Evans, underground manager of the colliery, who was the only person rescued from the dire calamity, died at Mareeba Hospital, at 9 a.m. on Monday, after lingering for a week from the time of his injuries. His wife was a constant attendant at his bedside and was with him at the last The funeral, which will be carried out with Masonic honors, leaves the Masonic Hall, Mareeba, at 11 a.m. this (Tuesday) morning. Deceased was a son of Mr. John Evans; consulting engineer of Sydney, and was 36 years of age at the time of his death, leaving a widow and one young son to mourn their loss. Great grief was expressed at Ma-reeba, when the news of the death was announced, and in every direction tribute is being paid to the memory of a man of sterling worth, who was held in high, esteem by all who came into contact with him.
