Mary (Evans) Griffiths was born in Cardiganshire, Wales.

Mary Ann Evans was born on 28 January 1861 in Tredwr Farm, Llangranog, Cardiganshire, Wales and her birth was registered in the March quarter in Newcastle in Emlyn. [1] She was the daughter of William Evans and Margaret (Jones) Evans.

In the 1861 Census Mary (age 2 months) was living on Tredwr Farm in Llangranog, Cardiganshire, Wales with her parents William and Margaret (Jones) Evans.[2] Her father was described as a Farmer of 96 acres, employing two boys and a shepherd. The family employed five servants, aged between 10 and 26. The servants were:

  • Bridget Thomas aged 26, employed as a Dairymaid;
  • Catherine Davies aged 16, employed as a General Servant;
  • David Davies aged 22, employed as a Carter;
  • James Davies aged 16, employed as a Carter; and
  • Thomas Griffith aged 10, employed as a Shepherd.

In the 1871 Census, Mary (age 10) was living in Llangranog, Cardiganshire, Wales with her parents William (a Farmer) and Margaret (Jones) Evans.[3] Also in the household were Mary Ann's siblings:

All of the children were born in Llangranog, Cardiganshire, Wales.

In the 1881 census Mary (age 20) was living in Llangoedmore, Cardiganshire, Wales with her parents William (described as a Farmer of 120 acres) and Margaret (Jones) Evans.[4] Also in the household were Mary Ann's siblings:

  • Thomas Evans aged 18;
  • Evan Evans aged 17;
  • Elizabeth Evans aged 15; and
  • John Evans aged 14.

When Mary was 23 she married William Griffiths on 29 May 1884 in Cardigan, Cardiganshire. They were married in the Capel Mair Chapel according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Independents. [5] Over the next few years, the couple had 3 children: Sarah Griffiths, Margaret Griffiths and Mary Hannah Griffiths.

In the 1891 census Mary (age 30) was in the home of her parents in Grange Town, St Mary, Cardiganshire, Wales along with her daughters Sarah (aged 5) and Margaret Griffiths (aged 4). [6] Also in the household were Mary Anne's siblings:

  • Anne Evans aged 17;
  • Jane Evans aged 14; and
  • Agnes Evans aged 12.

Sadly Mary and William's oldest daughter Sarah died aged just 15 at the start of 1901.

Shortly afterwards in the 1901 Census, Mary (age 40) was living at 15 Station Street, Ystradyfodwg, Glamorgan, Wales with her husband William (a Coal Miner Hewer Below Ground) and their daughters Margaret Griffiths and Mary Hannah Griffiths.[7]

In the 1911 census Mary (age 50) was living at 235 Rhys Street, Trealaw, Rhondda, Glamorgan, Wales with her husband William (a Hewer Coal Miner) and their daughters Margaret Griffiths (aged 24) and Mary Hannah Griffiths (aged 15). [8]

Her husband William died at the age of 65 on 9 April 1926 at 235 Rhys Street, Trealaw, Glamorgan, Wales.

Mary died at the age of 69 on 30 January 1930 at 235 Rhys Street, Trealaw, Glamorgan, Wales from a Cerebral Haemorrhage and Arterial Sclerosis.[9] Probate was on 29 March 1930 and the beneficiaries were her two surviving daughters, Margaret Mitchell and Mary Hannah Griffiths. [10]
