Leslie was born in 1885, probably at Orepuki, Southland, New Zealand, where his family was living at that time. He was the son of John George Evans and Grace Laing Sim. Leslie was the youngest of a large family. He had 13 siblings, eight survived to adulthood.
Leslie had ten years of schooling at Orepuki school (from 1890-1900) and left at about 15 years old to take up goldmining [1] (his father and brothers were gold-mining 1892-1908) [2]. Leslie married Alice May Synnott in 1910. Alice was born in 1882, in Hawera, South Taranaki, New Zealand. They had four sons together. In the 1911 electoral roll for Wallace electorate, Leslie was recorded as a cheese factory manager and residing at Te Wae Wae[3]. Leslie was managing a dairy factory in Taranaki for a time but suffered a fall which badly affected his back. Later he took up taxi driving[4]. Leslie passed away in 1925, at age 40, and is buried in the Hawera Cemetery.
