Biography

Lucy's surname appears variably in records as Davies/Davis. Lucy was illegitimate. Lucy's mother Jennie or Jane was 14 years old when Lucy was born. Lucy was raised by her grandparents, along with her uncles and aunts. Following Lucy's birth, her mother Jennie moved to South Wales and married into the Webber family of Ynsddu. When her mother married, Lucy kept her mother's maiden name - it's possible she did not know that Jennie was her mother when she was a child. Lucy Davis Evans married David Dance following the death of her first husband John Evans. Lucy had a step brother(?) Jim Webber of Ynysddu, and a step sister, Mary A. Webber. ^[1]

1881 CENSUS: Exford, Dulverton, Somerset England; Tailders Cottage; living in the household of her grandparents; Lucy is listed as 10 years of age She was born Exford, Somerset and a scholar. Her mother and step-sister Mary A. Webber were also listed as visitors in the household.^[3]

1901 CENSUS: Blackwood, Bedwelty, Monmouthshire: John and Lucy Evans are living at 133 High Street, Blackwood with their family. Lucy is 30 years of age (b c 1871) and was born in Exford, Somerset.^[4]

1911 CENSUS: 133 High Street, Blackwood, Rock Bedwellty. Albert David Dance, 30, b c1881 Hereford, Herefordshire; head of household, coal miner (hewer). Also in household: wife Lucy, 36, b c1875, Dulverton Somersetshire: stepson George Henry Evans, 18, b Blackwood, single, coal miner (hewer); stepson Arthur Stanley Evans, 17, b Blackwood, single, coal miner (hewer); stepdaughter Mary Evans, 12, b Blackwood, scholar; daughters Phoebe May Dance,5; Lillian May Dance, 3; and son William James Dance, 5/12; all born Blackwood.^[5]

1943: Listed as a benefactor in step-brother William Webber's Estate.

When Lucy married John Evans on July 2,1892 the Marriage Certificate showed the following information : No reference to her father, (normally if the father is deceased the certificate would say so). Lucy shown as age 21, spinster, domestic servant, living at Cwmfelinfach, Ynysddu. Marriage solemnized at the Registry Office, District of Bedwellty, County of Monmouth; John is listed as 32 years of age, bachelor, haulier at a colliery, residence at time of marriage was Blackwood, father's name/occupation was John Evans, master cordwainer. Witnesses were Margaret Smedley and Mary Jane Henry (registrar was Evan Jones Registrar and Fred Henry Supt. Registrar). ^[6]
