After the war, Elred lived in Baltimore for while and married Ann Waters "Annie" Higgins about 1871, in Baltimore, Maryland, United States.
They were the parents of at least 1 son and 2 daughters:
Eldred lived in Pearisburg, Giles, Virginia, United States in 1880 with his wife and children.[6]
He died on 14 February 1881, in Christiansburg, Montgomery, Virginia, United States, at the age of 38, and was buried in Christiansburg, Montgomery, Virginia, United States.[7]
