Was he perhaps some cousin to another Richard de Clare, who was the 2nd Earl of Pembroke? This second Richard de Clare was known by the nickname of "Strongbow",and he led an Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland in 1169.He was a Welsh-Norman lord notable for his leading role in the Norman Invasion of Ireland.

Funny, I had the same question. They were 1st cousins twice removed, according to the relationship finder - https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Special:Relationship&action=calculate&person1_name=Clare-645&person2_name=Clare-316. They both descend from one of the Norman invaders of England in 1066.
