Thomas Caton was born on 9 December 1812, at Preston, Lancashire, England. He was christened on 31 January 1813, at Kirky-Lonsdale, Westmorland, England.^[1] He was the son of James Caton (1786-1862) and Agnes Guy (1790-1853).

Thomas married Mary Anne Riley (1834-1867) on 31 January 1854, at Maitland, New South Wales, Australia.^[2] They had nine children.
