Ole Bull was born in 1810. From a young age, he exhibited a passion for music which led to his enrollment at the University of Christiana. At one point, he became discouraged and began the study of law, but soon found his way back to music, and, with the encouragement of his patron (Madame Villeminot), he found success[1].
In 1836, Ole married Madame Villeminot's granddaughter,[2] Alexandrine Felice Villeminot. She died in 1862 in Oslo.
In 1845, Bull ventured to America where he purchased a large tract of land in Pennsylvania with the goal of forming a Scandinavian colony called Oleona. The venture failed due to lack of money, and Bull was forced to resume his musical career.[3] A historical marker, located near Cherry Springs State Park, memorializes Bull's proclamation at the founding of Oleona:
'We are to found a New Norway, consecrated to liberty, baptized with independence, and protected by the Union's mighty flag.
Though his venture was a failure, Norwegians across the states revered Ole Bull. In 1925, Pennsylvania opened the Ole Bull State Park to honor the patron's vision and virtuosity in attempting to transplant Norway to America.[4]
Ole Bull married Sarah C. Thorpe, daughter of J.G. and Amelia C. Thorpe in Madison, Wisconsin on 6 September 1870.[5]
The Bulls were living with Sarah's parents in Eau Claire, Wisconsin in 1880. Ole was 70 years old, and his occupation was "Champion Violinist of the World". Sarah was 30 years of age. [6]
Ole Bull passed away in 1880. The Madison Journal marked his death with the following:
"Probably no musician was so well known, or possessed so many warm friends, as did Ole Bull. May he rest in peace."[7]
