Biography

"Pieter Bronck; was at new Amsterdam in 1643 and would seem to have been a relative of Jonas Bronck, who was probably a Dane. He is charged from 1650 to 1652 with an annual rent of four beavers for a lot in the bijeenwoninge (village), on which he received permission to build. Sept. 7, 1651, the court granted him permission to erect a tavern near his house, the director having withdrawn his request that according to instructions from the guardians of the young patroon but two taverns be allowed." [1]

Will of 1643

The will of Pieter Bronck was written 4 Nov 1643.[2] He left his estate to Engeltje Mans. "As regards his father, mother, or other friends, they are far from here, and if there be anything, they can not come here." This would indicate he had no wife or child at the time the will was written. It also implies that Pieter's father and mother are still living. We know that Jonas Bronck sometimes believed to be his father had been dead more than six months.

Amsterdam episode

In October 1645 Pieter Jonass Bronck, age 28 years, married Hilletje Jans, age 20 years in Amsterdam, Netherlands. [3]
In March 1646 Pieter Jonazen Bronck registered as a "poorter" in Amsterdam, with profession "sailor" and origin Sweden. [4]
In August 1646 a girl named Marritjen was baptized as daughter of Pieter Bronck. [5]

Notes

Pieter is assumed to have died when his wife and son appear in the court of Albany in 1669. [6]

A father's death date (Brunck-1 died 1590) should not be more than nine months before one of his children's birth dates (Bronck-3 born 1617) . SAVE ANYWAY [more info]

Jonas Bronck is given as Pieter's father in: Reynolds, Cuyler, Hudson-Mohawk Genealogical and Family Memoirs (1911), p. 1585.

Also, in Munsell, Claude Garfield,A Genealogy of the Munsell Family (1950), p. 36.

Ok, I'm watching a PBS documentary about New Netherland, "Dutch New York" http://www.thirteen.org/dutchny/video/video-dutch-new-york/ feat. Charles Gehring of the New Netherland Institute, and at about 39:20 historian Barry Lewis starts talking about Pieter Bronck and his brother Jonas Bronck. So I'm going to go ahead and detach Pieter as a son and move him up to the same speculative parents as Jonas.
