Biography
Janet "Jessie" Bell was born in 1856. She is the daughter of William Bell and Isabella Clazie.
The 1861 UK census at Coldingham, Berwickshire appears to show her name as "janet Mann Bell". Is this the same person? The origin of the middle name is unknown and the name doesn't appear in other known records.
Janet married Robert Edmiston in 1874 at Eyemouth, Berwickshire, and they had at least two sons. They were shown together in the 1881 UK census at Eyemouth.
The "Great Storm of 1881" occurred at Eyemouth on 14 Oct 1881, in which some 129 local fishermen were drowned. Apparently Janet's husband was not among them, as the 1891 UK census showed him still living at Eyemouth. Robert seems to have died between 1891-1901 but no exact date or clear evidence has been found.
In the early 1900s, Janet's two sons migrated to Canada, and she then joined them. Robert, his wife and family, were in the 1906 census at Winnipeg. Curiously, none of the Edmistons seem to be found in the 1911 Canada census. But the 1916 & 1921 censuses at Winnipeg, Manitoba showed Janet living with her son William, while son Robert and his family lived nearby. These census records indicate that Janet migrated to Canada in 1904.
Janet died in 1943 at Vancouver, British Columbia. The death certificate correctly showed her age, 87 years, and the names of her parents and husband.
