David Bell was born about 1807 in the Cherokee Nation (East). He was the son of John Bell, a white man and Charlotte Adair, a Cherokee. [1] He was the father of a son, John Francis Bell, born about 1836, whose mother is uncertain. He married Nancy Martin, also Cherokee, about 1837. They were the parents of three children, John Martin, James Foster, and Schermerhorn Bell (died young). [2] David and Nancy had separated by the time he died in 1848. [3]David also married Elizabeth Phillips; they had no children together.
Regarding John Francis Bell's mother: Emmet Starr lists Nannie Martin as David's first wife and says that he had no children with Elizabeth Phillips;[4] James Hicks believes John Francis' mother was Elizabeth Phillips; [5] David Hampton says that John married Elizabeth about 1846 and they had no children together. [6] John Francis apparently died unmarried and without children.
