Biography

William Andrew Bell was born 13 April 1840 in Tamlaght, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. He was the son of Andre/Andrew Bell and Judith Shean. His older siblings were:

  1. Isabella Bell (3)
  2. John Bell (2)

On 8 Mar 1842, he was christened at Tamlaght by Moneymore in Londonderry.

1850s

1860s

He immigrated to the United States.

On 14 May 1866, Andrew Bell (26) married Matilda Hopkins (~18) in New York. Matilda had been born about 1848 in New York.

In 1866, his son Andrew William Bell was born in New York.

In Oct 1869, his son Arthur J Bell was born in New York.

1870s

On 21 Jun 1870, Andrew Bell (30) lived in New York City, New York County, New York with his wife Matilda (22), son Andrew W (3), son Arthur J (7m), and Mr William Shaw (25). Andrew Sr worked as a carpenter, Matilda was keeping house, and William was a sash and blind maker. Andrew Sr had been born in Ireland while the rest of the household had been born in New York. Andrew Sr's real estate was valued at 15,000. [1]

His wife Matilda Bell died.

He married Wilhelmina Karoline Bergdoll. Wilhelmina had been born 1852 in Baden, Germany and was the daughter of George and Augusta Werzenger Bergdoll.

In 1878, his daughter Louisa Bell was born in Pennsylvania.

On 2 Aug 1879, his son Charles Deepman Bell was born in Linwood, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. [2]

1880s

In 1880, Andrew Bell (40) lived in South Chester, Delaware County with his wife Wilhelmina (26), son William (14), son Arthur (12), daughter Louisa (2), and son Charles (10m). Andrew worked as a carpenter and builder, Wilhelmina was keeping house, William worked in a mill, and Arthur was at home. [3]

On 21 Sep 1882, his son Jacob Bergdoll Bell was born in Pennsylvania.

On 22 Oct 1885, his wife Wilhelmina C Bergdoll (~31) died. She was buried at Old Saint Martins Episcopal Cemetery in Marcus Hook, Delaware County. [4]

On 22 Oct 1886, his mother-in-law Augusta Bergdoll died in Linwood.

1890s

In Aug 1895, his son Andrew Bell's engagement to Miss Louisa L Wood was announced. Their wedding date was schedule for 4 Sep 1895. [5] [6]

On 5 May 1897, William Bell (57) died in Marcus Hook. He was buried at Old Saint Martins Episcopal Cemetery. [7]

Funeral Notice [8] BELL--On the 5th inst., Andrew Bell, aged 57 years.

The relatives and friends of the family, also Farmers' & Mechanics' Lodge No. 185, of Linwood, are respectfully invited to attend the funeral on Sunday, May 9th, 1897, at 2 o'clock, from his late residence, at Linwood, Delaware county. Interment at St. Martin's Cemetery, Marcus Hook.
