Named after his mother’s uncle, Erastus Higley. Cabinet maker by trade [per 1870 census for Shelbyville, Indiana]. Civil war veteran attached to the Indiana 13th Cavalry Regiment, Company I. Enlisted 29 Feb 1864, rank of Private. Survivor of Confederate prisoner of war camp. Mustered out on 18 Nov 1865 at Vicksburg, Mississippi. [Report of the Adjutant General of the State of Indiana]. According to his granddaughter, Lois, he was a tall (6’2”) and strong man, but became deathly ill while in the P.O.W. camp in Mississippi, and she believed the after effects shortened his life. Obituary: “Mr. Beale was a highly respected citizen of this city (Shelbyville), died at his home in Indianapolis…of pneumonia…” Mr. Beale had been a member of the Dumont Post, G.A.R. (Veteran, Grand Army of the Republic) for many years. [The Shelbyville Republican, March 6, 1908]
He married Clarissa Louisa HOBBS, nickname "Clara." Occupation: Florist. [Marriage Records, Decatur County, Indiana 1852-1878, Book J, page 145] His children were: Flora Vera (Beale) Maier (1878-1914); and Elma May (Beale) Atkinson (1869-1945).
