The absence of a nominal roll makes it difficult to follow his career but he is described as a Lieut in the marriage register of 1813 and as a Captain when Margaret was baptised. With the end of the East India company's rule, Onesiphorus and family left for South Africa where their daughter Eleanor Rose was born in 1829.[newspaper birth notice South Africa]
On 20 March 1909 Beale acted as a second to his comrade Lieutenant Wright that resulted in the death of Lieutenant Young. Wright and his two seconds were subsequently charged with murder. By the time the case was heard all three defendants, who had continued to serve, had been promoted to the rank of Captain. They were all acquitted.
