Biography

Janet was born at the Smiddy in Pirnmill, Isle of Arran, Scotland on 20 August 1890.^[1][2] She was the daughter of Rob Anderson and Janet McMillan and was raised in Pirnmill, Isle of Arran, where she worked in her parents’ grocer’s shop.^[3]

Jenny married Angus Smith in Pirnmill on 25 Sep 1917^[4][5] and they had four children together - Addie, Seonaid, Isa and Robert.

Jenny and Angus raised their children at Shiskine Schoolhouse where Angus was the headmaster at the primary school. They encouraged their children to have a good education and supported their daughters at Rothesay Academy in Rothesay, Isle of Bute, where they boarded with a local family, and their son, Robert, at Kiel School in Argyll where he was a boarder. During the Second World War, they welcomed a young boy into their home from England. This boy was involved in a government evacuation program to protect families from the bombing and he loved Arran so much that he maintained his friendship with the Smith family throughout his life.

In 1951, Angus retired from teaching and the couple moved to their holiday house in Pirnmill. Jenny’s father had built this house, ‘Clisham’, for Jenny in 1932 and the family had spent many happy summers there during their working life.

Jenny suffered from a heart condition and passed away from a coronary thrombosis at her home in Pirnmill on 24 June 1961, at the age of 70.^[6][7] Jenny was buried in Clachan Glen Cemetery, Shiskine, Isle of Arran. ^[8]
